CHAPTER 5
One Year Later
Tamika was now in her third year of college at the University of Washington. Academically things were ok, but socially things were somewhat depressing. Certain things that had once seemed important back in high school now seemed petty and insignificant. The jocks that she had thought so highly of as a teenager were now just egotistical maniacs, brainwashed into believing that the world was supposed to stop and start on their command.
As Tamika stood waiting at the door of her class, she wondered what life had in store for her. The fairytales she had loved and worshipped as a child had long ago become silly childhood memories. Most people would describe her feelings as a loss of innocence, but Tamika simply found it to be the birth of reality.
“Hey girl, quit day dreaming and snap back.”
Tamika, who had been standing in the hallway preparing to enter her class turned to see Jasmine’s smiling face.
“Hey,” Tamika said smiling at her friend.
“Girl, I got a hangover,” Jasmine said rubbing her temples. “That party was the bomb last night. You should have been there.”
“Why?” Tamika laughed. “So I could feel like shit the next day, like you?”
“I met a guy last night that taught me some things that can’t no teacher in this school teach.”
“You’re a tramp!” Tamika laughed.
“Well, I’m a satisfied tramp!” Jasmine announced.
“Whateva’,” Tamika said turning to enter class. It just happened to be the one class that the two girls shared on their schedule. “Let’s get inside before your tardiness starts rubbing off on me.”
“This ain’t high school girl,” Jasmine said following her friend into the room and towards their seats. “As long as I pass the test, I ain’t worrying about being tardy.”
As the two girls sat down, Jasmine seemed to remember something she wanted to ask Tamika. “Hey girl, what the hell is going on in the house next door to you? Ain’t that where KK still lives?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, on my way to school I drove by your house and there was all kind of ambulances and fire engines next door.”
Tamika’s heart jumped because KK was currently in jail doing 6 months. She had made it a habit to check on his mother from time to time. Even though she had been scared of the woman as a child, Tamika had grown to accept Betty as a humorous fixture in her life. These days she even referred to the woman as Auntie Betty.
Jasmine looked perplexed. “Why you looking all tripped out? Didn’t you say that KK’s mom was a crackhead?”
“Yeah, I did say that, but you don’t understand the whole situation. I been knowing that woman my whole life!” Tamika pulled out her cell phone and dialed her home number.
“Hello,” her mother said as she answered the phone.
“Mom, what’s going on next door?”
“Lord, news travels fast.” Tamika’s mom said with a hint of sadness in her voice. “The lord decided to call Betty to heaven and save her from the hell she’s been living.
